All you need to know about dementia friendly cinema screenings

First thing you need to know? They’re not just for people with dementia! These screenings are open to everyone and there are no adjustments to the film content; just pure classic film in its original glory with a slightly adjusted sound level and a few lights left on!

Most people know someone who has been affected by dementia. Dementia is something we are becoming more and more aware of and the number of people living with dementia is estimated to rise to 1 million by 2025, according to the Alzheimer’s Society. There are over 5000 people living with a form of dementia in Shropshire alone.

So how can an afternoon at the pictures help a person living with dementia?

Many people living with dementia feel isolated, cut off from society and their local community. An afternoon at a relaxed cinema screening can re-engage people living with dementia and leave them feeling enriched.

A regular cinema screening can be daunting with loud music, dark shadows and inaccessible seating. At a relaxed seating, audiences can sing, dance and move around in a relaxed and warmly lit environment with more comfortable sound levels and trained ushers on hand who understand patrons’ needs.

How much does it cost?

Tickets are only £5 and include a tea or coffee and a biscuit during the interval. Light entertainment is also provided. Carers Free – please note that Carers tickets are not available online.

Is there parking available?

A drop off point is provided at the back of the venue for mini buses and private cars. Please do not park here as it is needed for access. For full information on venue accessibility, please see our Dementia Friendly page
