Local Information

Wem lies in the heart of North Shropshire and is an ancient town dating back to Saxon times. It has been a market town since 1202 and a market is still held in the town every Thursday.

The town boasts two excellent schools, St Peter's Primary and Thomas Adams Secondary with 6th form, both of which were awarded "outstanding" at their most recent Ofsted inspection.

Wem is filled with pretty Georgian buildings and delightful 'proper' small shops - like T.O. Williams, one of Shropshire's best bakers and delicatessen and Kings (the sort of hardware shop that sells everything you can possibly imagine) the colourful 'Seasons' florist shop, 'Treacle Mine', an old-fashioned sweet shop and tea-room, plus many more individual shops and businesses.

Wem is also the home to the modern sweet pea, and hosts the annual Eckford Sweet Pea Show in July, which brings in horticultural enthusiasts from far and wide. The town also host 'Mythstories' Museum of Myth & Fable, an unusual museum which explores myths, fables, legends and stories from all over the world. Wem also has a Sport's Centre and Swimming Pool.
