A world of alternative cinema makes its way onto big screens across Shropshire, along with cinema ‘pop ups’ in unexpected places, and a series of fascinating introductory talks on the genres of Documentary Film, World Cinema and Artists’ Moving Image.
Adventures in Alternative Cinema is an initiative of MediaActive, seeking to engage young audiences in specialist film, and broaden the horizons of tomorrow’s filmmakers, commissioners and audiences.
Two groups of Young Programmers meet regularly, one in Wem and one in Shrewsbury, to explore the un-chartered territory of non-mainstream cinema. They research and watch films, attend special film educational events and film festivals, and make recommendations to Wem Town Hall, and other venues and organisation across Shropshire, for specialist film screenings that would appeal to younger audiences.
The project is funded by the British Film Institute, Creative England, Arts Connect West Midlands and Shropshire Council.
